Difference between a phase and a state of matter

since everything that has mass and occupied some space is known as matter. the phase and state of matter are two different terms that are used interchangeably. the basic difference between a phase and a state of matter is that the state of matter elaborates the form of matter e.g., solid, liquid, or gas at a given temperature and pressure while the phase of matter explains the physical and chemical properties of matter and their composition, etc.

What are the states of matter?

state of matter is a physical condition of matter. it can be present in solid, liquid gas, and plasma states. Bose-Einstein condensate and neutron-degenerate matter are two newly discovered states of matter at extreme conditions. any of the above-mentioned stated is present at a given temperature and pressure.

What are the Phases of Matter?

On the contrary, the phase of matter deals with the physical and chemical properties of matter. matter can undergo some changes from one phase to another. this is called the transition of phase.


the phase change of matter can be understood easily by taking a daily life example. suppose that, we have a piece of dry ice (Carbon dioxide). at room temperature and pressure, it would be in the solid phase. as at 0°C water can be at a solid or gas state. by changing the temperature, we can change the phase of ice from solid to liquid or gas i.e., ice cubes turn into water or vapors.

in this way, we can understand how exactly the phase change occurs.
