Difference Between Atom And Molecule

An atom is the smallest unit of matter that forms a chemical element. every solid, liquid, gas, and plasma is composed of neutral or ionized atoms and it does not exist in a free state except in a noble gas. an atom does not have a chemical bond. On the other hand, a molecule is a group of atoms that have joined together into one piece. molecules have two or more atoms in them and some molecules have thousands and more than thousands of atoms in them. the main Difference Between Atom And molecules is that atoms are fundamental units of matter and defining the structure of an element, whereas molecules are the smallest particles of a compound that always exist independently. it always posses the properties of matter and atoms from the molecule.

Atoms are made of protons, neutrons, and electrons. molecules are made of atoms.
as a structure, it is the smallest particle in the universe that possesses the properties of an element. as a structure, it is made with the combination of two or more atoms.
it may or may not be stable in nature because the outermost shell is filled with electrons. in contrast, they are formed to gain stability.
Protons, Electrons & Neutrons are regarded as constituent elements of atoms. their constituent elements can be the combination of the same or different elements.
all atoms show reactivity with other elements of the periodic table except noble gases. their reactivity level is low as compared to atoms due to the presence of electrons in outermost shells.
they are unable to separate by chemical reactions. Can be separated by chemical reactions.
possess spherical shape. they can either be triangular, linear, or angular shapes.
it is not possible to see atoms with the naked eye or magnifying microscope. they can be seen using an electron microscope. they also can’t be seen with the naked eye but can be seen with a magnifying microscope.
they possess only nuclear bonds. they possess a covalent bond between atoms.
Hydrogen,  carbon, oxygen, Argon, Iron, Calcium are common examples of atoms. Carbon dioxide, glucose, Nitrogen, Ozone, water are common examples of molecules

What is an Atom?

the word “atom” is derived from the Greek language having means “indivisible”. the following concept was developed by an ancient Greek philosopher Democritus. he stated in his theory that actually, everything consists of atoms. while the atom is the smallest particle in the universe that cannot be sub-divided into tiny particles.

this concept has developed later on by scientists and now the atom has known as a building block of matter or elements. moreover, different substances possess different kinds of atoms which are totally different in size and properties from each other. For example, hydrogen atoms are small, and gold atoms are large, atoms of neon and helium hardly interact with other atoms, and oxygen atoms do this very actively.

when atoms are further grouped together and form molecules. however, unlike Democritus, now it is possible that an atom can be sub-divided into tiny particles like electrons, protons, and neutrons.

according to scientists, there are 92 types of atoms today that exist in nature and many of them are obtained through artificial ways.

Atoms are characterized by:
  • certain very small dimensions;
  • a certain, also very small, mass;
  • a certain structure.

What is a Molecule?

A molecule is the smallest particle of a substance that has all of its chemical properties. sometimes it consists of a single atom but most of the time it is formed with two or more atoms held together chemically. e.g. water molecule is composed of two atoms of oxygen (H2) and one atom of Oxygen (O). however, it is an electrically neutral particle that does not carry unpair electrons (Valence shells are filled with electrons)

in physics, there are different types of molecules like monoatomic, diatomic, and triatomic molecules, etc. all inert gases consist of monoatomic molecules.

the charged molecules are called ions, they can be either positive or negative ions. those electrons that are unsaturated valence shells are called radicals. those molecules that are relatively higher in weight are called macromolecules.
