Difference Between Endpoint and Equivalence Point

the endpoint and equivalence point are used in the titration of mixtures. the point where the titration process ends up in a chemical reaction is known as the equivalence point. on the other hand, the point indicated by color change using an indicator is called endpoint. the basic difference between Endpoint and Equivalence Point is that the endpoint will always occur after the equivalence point, it is dependent on pH and color changes to indicate complete titration while the equivalence point occurs before endpoint, it is the number of moles of the titrant.

The titration method is frequently used in chemistry for identifying and quantifying different components in mixtures or solutions. some of them are also performed under the conjugation process with an indicator. this indicator help to find out the end of a chemical reaction. the conjugation also changes the color of the solution. on the other hand, some regents also act themselves as an indicator. hence, indicators cannot be used in all systems and situations.

the endpoint of a titration at different points determines the titration results. it is not the final point where titration reactions end but the equivalent point decides the final result. when reaction ends up it shows that the equivalence point has reached.

What is an Endpoint?

the point at which color change into titration occurs is known as the endpoint of the titration. most of the time, both acids and bases are colorless solutions. so, indicators are used for acid-base neutralization reaction when the pH changes. hence, they need to choose accordingly.

What is Equivalence Point?

the point where the chemical reaction of the titration mixture ends up is called the equivalence point. it helps to determine the concentration of any substance in a liquid. when we add a known substance as a mixture, we can also use a known titrant with desired concentration. as a result, a standard solution with exactly known molarity is prepared.

for example, the acid-base reaction between NaOH and HCl where one of them is used as a titrant. this titrant is added with the help of a burette slowly and waits for the change of color occurrence. remember that NaOH and HCl titrant are not self indicators. here, the point when a change of color happens is known as the end point.

but, the point where all HCl molecules are reacted with NaOH and vice versa and moles of titrant and unknown analyte are equal, that point is called equivalence point.
