Difference Between Ester And Ether

Ester is a chemical compound derived from alcohol condensation in which at least one -OH hydroxyl group is replaced by an -O- alkyl group, on the other hand, ether is a class of organic compound that contains an ether group in which an oxygen atom is connected to two alkyl groups. the basic difference between Ester And Ether is that esters are easily polarizable in the presence of the carbonyl group, and they have the functional group -COO while others do not contain the carbonyl group and they derived from alcohol. ether contains a single bond between carbon and oxygen atom.

What is Ester?

They are chemical compounds that have a double bond between oxygen and the adjacent carbon. Esters are organic compounds where the hydrogen in the compounds carboxyl group is replaced with a hydrocarbon group. These are derived from alcohol and carboxylic acids. The carboxylic acids have the -COOH group, the hydrogen is replaced by a hydrocarbon in an ester. ‘RCO2R‘ is the chemical formula of ester where R is the hydrocarbon element of the carboxylic acid and “R” is the alcohol in this formula.

Characteristics of Esters

Esters are soluble in water while they can act as hydrogen-bond acceptors to form hydrogen bonds. Esters do not act as hydrogen-bond donors. They have fruity fragrances. They are volatile as compared to carboxylic acids, and are more polar than ethers and less polar than alcohol.

Examples of Esters

Ethyl acetate or (ethyl ethanoate) is a common example of ester. The hydrogen on the carboxyl group of acetic acid in ethyl acetate is replaced with an ethyl group. Ethyl propanoate, propyl ethanoate, propyl methanoate, and methyl butanoate are some examples of esters. Fatty acids and glycerides are the esters of glycerol.

What Is Ether?

Ethers are organic compounds that contain two aryl or alkyl groups by an oxygen atom. ‘R-O-R’ is the general formula for ether. Diethyl Ether is commonly known as Ether. The compounds Diisopropyl ether, pentabromodiphenyl ether, polyethylene glycol, anisole, ethylene oxide, and dioxane are examples of ethers compounds.

Properties of Ethers

Ether doesn’t contain a carbonyl group, and its functional formula is –O-. Ethers have relatively low boiling points as these molecules are unable to form hydrogen bonds with each other. Because of the C-O-C bond, ethers compounds are slightly polar. Ethers are flammable and highly volatile.
