Difference Between Lipids And Fats

You should understand that fat is an oily substance found in the body that is present under the skin or around the organs. While lipids are the class of organic molecules which is insoluble in water and is soluble in organic substance.  The major difference between lipids and fats is that lipids serve a variety of important functions in living organisms.  Lipids are compounds that are soluble in organic solvents but insoluble in water. On the other hand, Fats are organic compounds containing carbon and hydrogen atoms, they are generally soluble in organic solvents and largely insoluble in water. Fat is a kind of lipid consisting of triesters of glycerol and fatty acids or triglycerides.

Lipids Vs. Fats – Overview

We eat foods with less fat for a healthy life. Fats are an essential part of the diet which provides important nutrients in the body to maintain good health. while lipids are organic compounds that form the framework of function and structure of cells. Fats play a key role in metabolic and chemical functions in the body while they are different from lipids in physical and chemical aspects.

Lipids

These are organic biomolecules insoluble in water but in organic solvents while are soluble. There are three types of lipids, i.e. triglycerides, steroids, and phospholipids. It is a diverse group also found in animal bodies. Most lipids are solids while others are liquids.

Triglycerides are the largest family of lipids and are also called natural fats. Phospholipids are the derivatives of triglycerides and consist of two fatty acid molecules. Steroids are hydrophobic molecules and are present as cholesterol and hormones in the body.

Lipids are a wide group of macromolecules that forms the functional and structural framework of living cells. The source of lipids is synthesized by the liver and is often sourced from whole milk, butter, oils, fried food, and found in some red meats.

Lipids are polymers of fatty acids with a nonpolar hydrocarbon chain and a small polar oxygen group. Lipid constitutes the cell membrane which is an important inner cell barrier from the outer surroundings.

Fats

Fats are liquid considered solids at room temperature. Saturated and trans are the two major types of fats. Fats have a single chain in fatty acids. Fats contain single bonds and have high melting points. Fats are more stable than oils.

Beef fat, butter, and shortening are the fats that are solids at room temperature. these fats come from animal foods and can also be made from vegetable oils by hydrogenation. Trans and saturated fats raise cholesterol levels in the blood which increases the risk for heart disease.
