Difference Between Oxidation And Reduction

an oxidation-reduction reaction is a chemical reaction that changes the oxidation number of participant chemical species. it is also called a redox reaction. it is a large diverse body of processes. the basic difference between Oxidation And Reduction is that oxidation is losing electrons, increase in oxidation number, and releases energy while reduction is known for gaining electrons, decreases oxidation number, and stores energy. most of the reactions are concerned with fire, dissolving of metals, rusting, respiration, photosynthesis, browning of fruits, etc.

when a reactant loses electrons during the reaction is called oxidation. when a reactant gains electrons during the reaction is called reduction.

Oxidation vs Reduction – Overview

oxidation and reduction are two half-reactions that are collectively called redox reactions of different compounds. while redox is a chemical reaction in which electrons are exchanged between their atoms. the oxidation is a loss of electrons. on the other hand, the reduction is a gain of electrons. however, the oxidation state remains too different in products from reactants.

the word redox itself indicates an abbreviation of two processes of chemical reaction “reduction-oxidation”. both reactions are sometimes simple and can also be very complex depending on the atoms involved in the reactions.

What is oxidation?

the term “Oxidation” can be described as the increase in the state of oxidation or loss of electrons by an atom, ion, or molecule. the loss of electrons consequences an increase in the oxidation state of that participant chemical. in this process, there must be some particles that can accept these electrons.  in this way, it is a halfway process of the entire. it is represented with a positive (+) or Negative (-) number or symbol. the positive sign indicates the loss of an electron while the negative resembles the gain of an electron by atom, ion, or molecule.

What is Reduction?

it is simply a decrease in oxidation state due to the gain of electrons by an atom, ion, or molecule.  this increment of oxidation number leads to the decrease in the chemical’s oxidation state. since the reduction reaction is also a half-reaction of the main reaction that can produce electrons in the presence of donor particles. in this process, the oxidation number remains always (+). we can also consider this process as the “removal of an electron from a compound”.
