Difference between Petrol and Diesel Engine

A petrol engine is an internal combustion engine that has spark-ignition, designed to run on petrol and similar volatile fuels. Generally, fuel and air are usually pre-mixed before compression. a petrol engine works on the otto cycle. while a diesel engine is an internal combustion engine in which ignition of the fuel is caused by the elevated temperature of the air in the cylinder due to the mechanical compression. a diesel engine works on a diesel cycle. the basic difference between Petrol and Diesel engines is that in a petrol engine air and petrol are mixed into the carburetor before they enter into the cylinder and ignition is done by the electric spark.  on the other hand, in diesel engines, fuel is mixed with air inside the cylinder, and ignition is done by the heat of compression.

Difference between Petrol and Diesel Engine in Tabular Form

Petrol engines are often used for light motor vehicles such as motorcycles, cars, and generators. petrol engines are used for heavy-weight carriage vehicles like trucks, buses, etc.
they consume more fuel. they consume relatively low fuel.
the initial cost and maintenance cost is very low for these engines. the initial cost and maintenance cost is very high for these engines.
low compression ratios such as  (7-10) high compression ratios such as (11-20)
lower efficiency higher efficiency

In a petrol engine, an electric spark is used to ignite these engines with the help of fuel. The principle working of a petrol engine is that air and fuel are mixed before compression and then an electric spark is used for ignition. The ignition temperature is the lower temperature that which a combustible substance when heated catches fire. A petrol engine has a lower efficiency than a diesel engine.

What is Diesel Engine?

A diesel engine works on the Diesel Cycle principle. Trucks, trains, airplanes, and other heavy vehicles run on diesel engines. Diesel engines are the internal combustion engines that work on diesel. Diesel engines are used for heavyweight carriage vehicles like trucks, buses, etc.

It also works by compressing the air. The temperature increases inside the cylinder to such a high degree that atomized diesel injected into the combustion chamber ignites spontaneously. It has the highest efficiency.
