Difference Between Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum And Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum

Rough endoplasmic reticulum and smooth endoplasmic reticulum are two major types of the endoplasmic reticulum that develop an interconnected system consisting of membrane-bound channels in the cytoplasm of the cell. The endoplasmic reticulum is a membrane-enclosed organelle found only in eukaryotic cells. It consists of a membrane network which is known as cisternae. The rough appearance is given by the bound ribosomes on the surface. The major difference between Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum And Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum is that Smooth endoplasmic reticulum gives off an impression of resembling a smooth surface when seen from the electron magnifying instrument as they don’t contain ribosomes. It doesn’t have ribosomes on its film. On the other hand, the rough endoplasmic reticulum resembles a lopsided surface due to the presence of the 80S ribosomes when seen in the electron magnifying instrument. They have ribosomes appended to their layer.

It is generally interconnected with proteins and membranes that are made by the rough endoplasmic reticulum into the smooth ER to be transferred to other locations. It provides proteins and lipids for the Golgi apparatus by special transport vehicles. In the Golgi-apparatus, the proteins are modified. Proteins are transported to their proper destinations within the cell. Rough ER are organized of cisternae and a few tubules. RER is present near the cytoplasm. It helps in the formation of lysosomes.


The main difference between the smooth ER and rough ER is the presence of ribosomes, as smooth ER does not consist of ribosomes while rough ER consists of ribosomes. Both are important parts and play a vital in the functioning (significant roles in the production and processing of various molecules) of the plant and animal cells, along with how they vary from each other. SER is located near the cell membrane while RER is present near the cytoplasm of the eukaryotic cells. The major difference between the smooth ER and rough ER is the presence of ribosomes. The smooth endoplasmic reticulum does not consist of ribosomes while the rough endoplasmic reticulum consists of ribosomes.
