The metabolism is the redox reactions through the regulation and use of proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, fats, and minerals, allow other functions, the growth of organisms that regulate the temperature of the body, produce energy, and maintain the vital functions in the body. These chemical reactions that take place at the cellular level and are enzymatically channeled, are organized into pathways, that can be catabolic or anabolic. Therefore, catabolism and anabolism are two types that make up the metabolic process and whose balance is essential to achieve the survival of living beings, frequently exposed to natural or anthropic disturbances and alterations.

The major difference between catabolism and anabolism is that catabolism is a decomposition reaction that which energy is formed. While they are two different processes, they work in a coordinated way. On the other hand, anabolism produces large molecules from smaller ones, catabolism is a reduction reaction where a complex molecule is converted into a simpler one. While, on the contrary, anabolism uses energy released in catabolic processes to form complex ones through simple molecules. All the metabolic reactions have on the growth of living beings. The organisms develop when anabolism exceeds catabolism, while their growth stops when the magnitude of both processes is the same. What is catabolism?

A part of the metabolic process in which different organic nutrients are degraded, reduced, or oxidized to their simplest forms so that the body assimilates them and transforms them into energy. The energy that is released in the reaction is essential for the functioning of anabolism. The released energy is stored in adenosine triphosphate molecules. The cell performs important actions i.e. muscle contraction and molecule synthesis. Catabolism is a destructive phase of the reduction reaction by a complex molecule i.e. carbohydrates and lipids, and other simpler ones such as 2O, CO2, lactic acid, or ammonia are obtained. There are various stages of catabolism which are listed below:

  • Complex organic molecules i.e proteins, polysaccharides, or lipids, are degraded to amino acids, monosaccharides, and fatty acids, respectively.
  • simpler molecules are carried into cells and convert into even simpler molecules, releasing energy during the process.

  • Degrade organic nutrients.
  • Extracting chemical energy from degraded nutrients to be used by the body.
  • Nourish the body using tissues when there is a lack of food.

What is Anabolism?

It is a construction chemical reaction in which complex molecules are synthesized into simpler ones that can be organic or inorganic and the molecules can grow and renew themselves, or be stored as energy reserves. The energy is consumed to obtain complex or large molecules from smaller molecules and energy is supplied in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). There are also various stages of anabolism which are listed below:

  • In the first step, precursors are produced, for example, amino acids, monosaccharides, and others.
  • In the second stage, the precursors are activated, using energy from adenosine triphosphate (ATP).
  • Finally, more complex molecules are produced, such as proteins, polysaccharides, lipids, and nucleic acids.
