What is a Mixture?

A mixture is a system or composition that consists of many substances. it is a very common term that is widelyWhat are Mixtures used in physics and chemistry. A mixture is formed when elements or substances chemically react with each other. in this way, due to the reaction new substances are formed called mixtures. mathematically, (A + B = C).


A mixture can be of two types either heterogeneous or homogeneous. homogeneous mixtures consist of a single phase while heterogeneous mixtures consist of multi-phase (two or more).

It is important to note that by mixing different substances with each other, no new substance is formed but only the resultant mixtures possess everything original from participant substances.

as a result, we can separate mixtures into their original parts at any time.

What are Homogeneous mixtures?

Homogeneous mixtures appear uniform to the eye. They consist of a single phase, whether it is liquid, gas, or solid, no matter where you try them or how closely you examine them. The chemical composition is the same for all samples of the mixture.

What are Heterogeneous Mixtures?

they are non-uniform mixtures having different compositions. we can use some of the mechanical methods to separate the different components of this type of mixture. for example, we filter sand to differentiate different stones.

on the other hand, some mixtures are known to be very obvious that possess many kinds of materials as a sample in them. for example in a common salad, we can see different types of vegetables at different proportions, sizes, and shapes.

What are Heterogeneous Mixtures

while, in other mixtures, we need a closer look into the participants of mixtures to differentiate them. in short, any mixture that has more than one phase of a different amount of matter is known as a heterogeneous mixture. for different conditions, a mixture can be changed.

for example, a closed soda water bootle has a uniform composition homogeneous mixture. but, when we open the bottle, a gas of carbonation is discharge in the shape of bubbles. now, after discharging the gas, the soda is now a heterogeneous mixture.

Homogeneous Vs Heterogeneous Mixtures

since, mixtures can be divided into two types i.e., heterogeneous and homogeneous. both words are derived from Greek having meanings of ” different” and “similar” respectively. but, what they are?

in heterogeneous mixtures, the components can be seen with naked eyes. on the other hand, in the homogeneous mixtures, the substances are so mixed that can’t be seen with the naked eye. they are also well mixed and can only be distributed under the microscope.

we have some examples to look at. by adding some cooking oil to a test tube and then shaking it carefully, it makes little drops instead of spreading in the air. as the components of this mixture i.e., water and oil can be distinguished in this form, hence it is known as a heterogeneous mixture.

now, look t another example..!

let’s put a few teaspoons of sugar into a beaker. then put some water and stir into it. by shaking it can be changed into a mixture that can’t be distinguished easily into its components. hence, a mixture that cannot be distinguished is known as a homogeneous mixture.

the third example can be taken as the mixture of air in our atmosphere. the oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon are present as a mixture in the air.

can you guess easily a homogeneous or heterogeneous mixture?

I think you are not been able to do so.

so, as mentioned above, it is a mixture of different kinds of gases that can be distinguished easily. as a result, we can say that it is a homogeneous mixture.
